The Mineral Kyanite

The mineral Kyanite, generally seen in metamorphic pegmatites that are Aluminum- rich or in sedimentary rocks, is a silicate mineral of a specific blue color.

Kyanite is associated with the aluminosilicate sequence, the Alusite and polymorph series and also the polymorph Sillimanite. The Kyanite mineral is very much anisotropic, so much so that its hardness differs based on the direction of its crystallography. This anisotropism in Kaynite is perhaps an identifying characteristic.

Kaynite is a mineral of aluminum silicate, frequently found as crystals of a long thread like blades, which are either translucent or transparent with a pear-like sheen. The frequently occurring colors used in metaphysics are indigo, black, white and green. At times they are found in colors of pink, gray, yellow and most recently they are found in orange color.

The other places where Jamesonite was obtained are Arkansas, Southern Dakota, USA; Mexico, Zacatecas and Rumania. Jamesonite is not a mineral that occurs commonly.

Jamesonite represents one of the rare minerals of sulfide found in the form of delicate acicular crystals, with the appearance of fibers in the form of hairs that are thick enough to envelope the crystal with their fibrous hairs. If not, it becomes sparingly dispersed among other minerals and mistaken for the real hairs.

Kyanite is found in pegmatite, gneiss, quartz and schist veins as a result of the high pressure metamorphism pertaining mainly to pelitic rocks, in sedimentary rocks, it occurs as detrital grains, in association with Staurolite,  Dalusite, Talc, Sillimanite, Gedrite, Hornblende, Corundum and Mullite.

Derivation of Name
The NAME Kyanite is a derivation of the Greek word kuanos, at times having reference with “kyanos”, which means bark blue

The mineral Kyanite’s importance as an index mineral for estimating the depth, temperature and pressure by which metamorphism takes place in a rock can never be underestimated

Since Kyanite is rarely used in jewelry, it is referred to as an “exotic” gem stone.

Earlier Kyanite was used in the form of a partially precious gemstone, which probably displays cat’s eye chatoyancy, even though it has limited use in its clear cleavage and anisotropism.
